Dementia often creeps up on a person. In its early stages, it can be difficult to detect.

U.S. News and World Report notes that many times people brush off the symptoms of dementia as normal signs of aging. This can be detrimental because a person with dementia can become fairly bad off quickly, which requires a certain level of care. Knowing what to pay attention to and look for can help you to know if your loved one is displaying dementia signs.

Seek help

If your loved one is suffering from random bouts of memory loss or confusion, do not just assume it is normal. Seek the help of a doctor. Have testing done to look for the telltale internal damage that points to dementia. This is the best way to identify the condition before it gets too bad.

Get early help

It may be easier to get help for your loved one before he or she is having more severe symptoms. Once dementia gets worse, your loved one may refuse help or treatment. He or she may become combative and be difficult to protect. Taking steps early while the person still has his or her cognitive functions intact can make things easier on everyone and ensure your loved one stays safe.

Use technology

Make use of all the technology available to help you monitor and assist your loved one while allowing him or her to remain dependent. In the early stages of dementia, your family member may not need intensive care. He or she may wish to remain independent, but there could still be safety risks. Suggest cameras to help monitor him or her. This will allow the person to stay independent while also giving you peace of mind that you can keep an eye on things.

Dealing with dementia is never easy for anyone. And because of the nature of the disease, it only gets harder. Catching it early can make the whole process smoother for you and the person you love.
